Time owned: 6 to 12 months I own a Yaesu FT-736r it has the added 6m in it,SP-767 speaker,MD-1 mic and also the hand mic. This is one great radio I have used this radio everyday and like it more and more everytime I use it VHF/UHF SSB the receive it A+ also have a FT-857D but the 736R is the first choice in the shack. to bad they dont make them like this anymore would be very hard to replace with a new radio. Thanks and 73 DL1AIW Rating: 5/5 Sep 13, 2009 04:37 Send this review to a friend great rig Time owned: more than 12 months I own the FT 736 R for more than a year now and nothing can be said against ist, maybe exept the big size, which is al little unusual compared to more recent transceivers. Being no satellite fan I use ist mainly for DX (SSB mode and CW with external keyer) and in contests from our clubstation am I am fully satisfied with the performance. It is much better on 2 m and 70 cm than any recent rig I know. Sensitivity, noise and also ergonomics are outstanding; modern manufacurers should take a look this transceiver to learn what seems to be forgotten in the field of VHF/UHF-rigs. WA3LWR Rating: 5/5 Jul 16, 2008 05:34 Send this review to a friend Excellent Time owned: more than 12 months Bought it second hand with 2/220/440 and 6 meters installed. A little complicated at the programing, but it does a nice job on repeaters and satellites. Have not had any problems with the unit and it has enough bells and whistles to keep anyone happy. DJ0ABR Rating: 5/5 May 5, 2008 15:57 Send this review to a friend Best VHF/UHF rig of the world Time owned: more than 12 months I own the FT736R since 15 years. It did a wonderful job during all the time on satellites, repeaters, 6m and all other bands.I cannot understand why it is not manufactured any more.If you are looking for a VHF/UHF rig forget about the actual rigs like IC-910 or TS-2000. The FT736R is a much better rig with a much better quality and is still the first choice for satellite operation. WA2QIC Rating: 5/5 Jan 3, 2008 10:26 Send this review to a friend Great VHF/UHF base Time owned: 0 to 3 months I have been looking for a dedicated VHF/UHF base for awhile and settled on the 736R. I already have a fine HF rig and didn't want to buy another new HF rig with the additional VHF/UHF bands. I didn't care for the Icom VHF/UHF base, so that left me in the use rig market, where the 736R seems to standout as best-in-class.I am very happy with the operation/function of this radio. It is exactly what I was looking for to go beyond repeater ops and into weak signal SSB, and satellite work, and I think it's a shame that the VHF/UHF base niche is being largely ignored by the so-called 'Big Three' manufacturers. One thing I would echo from others who have mentioned this: The FT-736R is a highly modular radio - the base radio is really very basic. CTCSS is an add-on module for example - and a must have, so is the internal keyer as well as the band add-ons, and others as well. Most internet dealers, such as those on Ebay, realize that they can get more money for the individual modules sold separately than they can for the rig w/modules included. So they chop up the rig and sell off the parts. So, if you can find a fully loaded FT-735R, then it would be cheaper to buy it, rather than a base model rig and buy the modules separately. IK0YKM Rating: 5/5 Aug 28, 2007 01:28 Send this review to a friend Beautiful radio Time owned: 6 to 12 months Great transceiver. My first VHF radio. Exceptional. Wonderful receiver and great sensibility in both the bands. If perhaps better advanced to the 50 watts for VHF and UHF. Beautiful and scratching modulation. The top for the traffic via satellite. I actually use for AO-15 and VO-52. He remains however the king of the VHF/UHF. W6PMR Rating: 4/5 Aug 4, 2007 16:26 Send this review to a friend All mode on 220 and four bands! Time owned: 3 to 6 months I picked up this rig because I'm setting up a contest station and needed 220mhz all mode. Myrig came with 6/2 and 440 and 1.2. I soon found out it's faster and cheaper to just buy another 736R with the bands you need and re-sell the spare radio.Mine now has 2/220/440 and 1.2ghz and fulfills all my base contest needs. After using it for about six months these are my observations on this radio.I live in a semi-rural area so intermod and selectivity do not seem to be any problem. Sensitivity as compared to my other all mode 2 meter radio, (Kenwood 751) is about the same switching antennas on the same signal. Not exactly lab testing but It's what I have to compare. No r.i.t. and no dial lock are my only complaints. There are no other radios out that are multi band with 220 so if you have the space, (it's a big guy!) put it on your desk. All-in-all it's a unique rig that seems to be a decent perfomer with the only downside being that it's getting long on the tooth and that age will factor in after a while. WD9GJK Rating: 5/5 Feb 24, 2007 07:55 Send this review to a friend Best for the buck Time owned: more than 12 months I have owned my ft736R for a year now I Found it on Ebay and love it so much that when I found one at an estate sale I bought a second one... The receiver is very sensitive and excellent transmitter reports from all worked. I bought the first because my Ft-847 doesn’t have 220 SSB and wanted that band for VHF contesting. The rig came with 2-220-440 installed and the PLL board I got the second because it had 6 meter board in it freed up the 847 for serious Hf work the modules are real easy to take out and install my primary 736R now has 6-2-220-440 and the second one sits up by my computer for local fm repeater work in the Chicago area. All I am using is a short whip antenna off the back of the rig and can work repeaters 40 miles away no sweat. This rig has filled a void in my VHF-UHF station and I am very happy that I found it. I am currently looking for a 1296 module for the second one and will be able to work all of the bands it was designed for. It is truly the best VHF-UHF rig I have owned. If you get a chance to work on you wont be disappointed in the performance it put out. But an external PS is the solution for this.Since 2 years I have another problem: on 70 cm's the rig becomes instable after 5-10 minutes. The frequency is drifting - faster and faster every minute.. Switching to another band and wait a few minutes is a solution but the problem repeats within 5 min. after switching back to 70 cm's.Has anybody an idea how to solve this ?(See QRZ.com for my Email).1296 Mhz is still working perfect, an external preamp is a must. These days I use my FT736 mainly for 6m. It is performing very well, also in WSJT modes. And last but not least: I like the frontdesign !Freek - PE2PE N0TTW Rating: 5/5 Sep 21, 2006 22:03 Send this review to a friend A hot radio :) Time owned: more than 12 months I bought this radio a year ago and at great price on Ebay (00). It has the 220 and 1.2G options installed as well as a couple other options. I have had a ball using it for terestrial and satellite work. This radio is worth its weight in gold. HAMGUY123 on Ebay would have it stripped down and it would cost you over 00 to get the options I have.So if your lucky, grab one! You won't regret it. I had actually bought it back in 1999, and never opeened it.I am having the time of my life with it. The power supply is a bit noisy. I will try driving it with my Astron VS-50M.So far, its cool to have a Brand new 1987 circa Sat radio. I have installed the 23cm and 6m modules. So far so good. KI4GPX Rating: 4/5 Feb 25, 2005 13:49 Send this review to a friend Excellent all-mode base rig! Time owned: 3 to 6 months After reading many good eHam reviews on the FT-736R, I decided to purchase one (pre-owned, of course). I wanted 220Mhz capabilities, as well as 2M & 440Mhz. The added kick was to be able to work SSB and SAT -- all on one rig.The FT-736R has done a great job -- with excellent audio reports. I'm a relatively new ham, so ease-of-use and configuration are important to me. The FT-736R scores high in these areas as well. The only constructive criticisms I have are:1) I wish the rig had more power output.2) The frequency scan feature is a little cumbersome to use.All in all, a very good choice for anyone looking to purchase a solid base unit that will do 6M, 2M, 220, 440 & 1.2Ghz. You choose -- 4 modules will fit the rig -- with four seperate antenna outputs. WV4R Rating: 5/5 Dec 20, 2004 05:43 Send this review to a friend I Fondly Remember my FT-736R... Time owned: more than 12 months I Fondly remember my FT-736R which I bot NEW back in the early 80's. I was living near Downtown Miami intermod city and recall the "S-meter" going nuts but Never passing any intermod, unlike my other "mobile" style radios. I liked the modular band units. The FM Audio was real Studio Quality using only the Yeasu desk mic. Operation was straight forward although I had to add an Outboard ComSpec PLL box for metro repeater ops. I liked the Dual Power design for 12VDC ops IF the 110/220VAC failed. The unit was big. The unit was heavy. The modules were not high power. Power was continuously adjustable. The unit Looked and Felt like a quality rig. I never experienced any of the Negatives of previous Product Reviewers. I sold my FT-736R only after my job went out of business and I had to sell out and move out, otherwise, I probably would still have it. Because I owned the FT-736R for Nine Years without a hiccup and because it Did What It Did, it has to earn the WV4R "FIVE" Star Rating for a classic rig which is still worth it's money today. 73 es God bless. murf/wv4r. VE8NSD Rating: 5/5 Dec 20, 2004 00:15 Send this review to a friend I like mine Time owned: more than 12 months I bought mine on eBay (gasp!) from a guy named Adam Farber who sells lots of '736's and accessories for them. Great guy, great radio. I use mine strictly for 6 meter aurora and e-skip. It works great and there's nothing that I would change. I built up a base mic from a bunch of old Turner parts for it and put an old Mirage 150 watt amp after it. With a 2 element quad I'm having a great time. Less TVI then my Yaesu FT-817 that I used to use on 6. Also less susceptible to RF fields then my '817 which was always howling about something if I hooked any sort of amp to it. The speech processor makes a real difference on aurora conditions. Plus, (and this is a minor point) this radio just looks right. Visitors to the shack are impressed just looking at it. Even though these are old radios they still aren't cheap. There's a reason for that. It's a good set. AC5ZO Rating: 5/5 Jun 15, 2004 16:26 Send this review to a friend Update Time owned: more than 12 months It turns out that my radio was suffering from a slow failure on a ground connection in the TCXO area. This allowed the radio to drift around and exhibit poor selectivity. My review of this radio was colored by the fault condition.Yaesu Factory Service repaired the problem and realigned the radio in January 2004. It works better than I remember, so the fault could have been developing over a period of years. I just used the radio for the 2004 June VHF QSO party and it is working fine. I don't have any plans to replace it, now. AC5ZO Rating: 4/5 Jun 26, 2003 15:32 Send this review to a friend Good but could be better. Time owned: more than 12 months I bought the 736R new quite a few years ago. I have the CW filter and additional modules for 6M and 1200. I like the full duplex for satellites. When it was new, it also gave me 6M at a time when 6M was not a standard part of many HF radios. It has been used for some remote work from hill tops while on 4WD expeditions and it has held up to the rugged treatment. What I don't like about the radio is the receiver which is subject to overload and poor selectivity. The sensitivity is also poor, but that can be corrected with any of the preamps on the market. I am currently looking for MuTek boards for this older radio rather than selling it. I think for the best weak signal work, good transverters are probably superior when used with a good IF radio, but with the 736R, you get everything in one convenient box. I have contacted MuTek in GB and they are still in business and I will write a review on the finished product when I am done with the upgrade. DK6NY Rating: 4/5 Jun 12, 2003 08:58 Send this review to a friend Best on market - but still not superb Time owned: more than 12 months I got mine 4 years ago - added 50M and 1G2 modules and filters. The rig has all modes on all 4 bands, which makes this TRX so amazing. Easy to use. Power output is enough for me (10/25/25/10). It has great cross band functionality.Operation: I use it TX on 1G2 SSB, RX on 430M. Sound is ok, but the ssb processor is hardly noticeable. The frequency is pretty stable, but the rx part should be improved (needs improvement on all bands, needs dramatic improvement on 430M). Rx is rather noisy, the strong signal capabilities are so-so. If you have the choice between getting an FT736 with or without mutek frontend -GET THE MUTEK !It has electronic (pin diodes) rx/tx switching - this makes cw bk operation bearable. Great !Maintanance: the 736 is easy to adjust, once you have the service manual. All the spec values can be reached exactly which is not the case for all ham boxes. All necessary adjust points are easy to reach. The psu is rather poor for this TRX.Resumee: the best VHF/UHF box around. Use preamps on 430M and 1G2 to overcome the rx noise. Don't adjust the 2m power to 30 watts as long as you don't have multiple power supplies. Place a small fan on top of the psu. PY2ZS Rating: 5/5 Feb 11, 2003 16:11 Send this review to a friend Very good, with minor design flaws Time owned: 3 to 6 months I recently got an used FT-736R, and I found it a great bargain for satellite operation. The reported audio is excellent and the basic funcionality is really very good. This is the only multiband/multimode base transceiver with 220 MHz option. (Why FT-847 doesn't have this option???)But there are some design flaws:a) The internal power supply is noisy and there are many FT-736Rs with burned power supplies due to overheating. No problem, use an external power supply!b) The main encoder ("VFO" encoder) "pop" as the radio becomes warmer, like in his brother FT-767GX...c) Lots of positive feedback and oscilation at the PLL unit in the 70 cm module. As you see, Yaesu tried to solve this problem with lots of grounding wires around the upper side of the FT-736R.d) Speech processor: The processor at FT-767GX is a real RF processor, and FT-736R has only a shy ALC-type speech processor (I believe is more likely a CB rig...)e) The internal CW keyer is optional (*@#$%&%&!!! - It is not availabe anymore...)Nevertheless, I recommend this excellent radio for every VHF/UHF fan! Sold the 6 and finally replaced it with the 1.2 g unit. I think the radio is excellent, and am giving it five stars because it is currently the only multiband radio with 222 mhz (SSB and CW), and buying an Icom 375A would cost more than getting a 736 with the 222 module. A couple of things that I did not like about the rig:1. No AM2. Only 10 watts on 6, would like to see 25 like on other bands3. Frequency shifted when going from USB to CW. Made cross mode contacts involve retuning.4. Tone encoder was not standard, although mine had it installedHowever, other nice things were:1. ability to add CW filter and keyer2.
