These gentle Welsh eccentrics are at the forefront of a revival of the whimsical, pastoral English psychedelic tradition typified by (Gong leader) Ayers and his early 70s compatriots, The Soft Machine and Mike Oldfield. Brief songs float by, supported by delicate Spanish guitar and hand percussion, flavored with exotic horns and stringed instruments, and topped with artless but captivating harmonies-often delivered in the band's lovely, melodic native tongue. The Gorkys sidestep the pitfalls of their forebears, however, steering well clear of the fondness for extended jams and silly lyrics that often hamstrung earlier psychedelic artists. Like the music of their American counterparts in the Elephant 6 collective--The Apples In Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, and Neutral Milk Hotel--the Gorkys' sparkling pop diamonds prove that true psychedelia need not be equated with slavish revivalism.Editorial reviews4 Stars - Excellent - ...They draw from a deep well of 1960s and 1970s influences, merging the madcap iconoclasm of early Frank Zappa and Syd Barrett with the skewed melodic majesty of Brian Wilson and the British art-pop group the Soft Machine...Spin (9/96, p.148) - 8 - Very Good - ...the loopy, grin-inducing patchworks featured on their U.S. debut--My Bloody Valentine guitar rave-up melts into Herman's Hermits chorus, Brian Wilson shakes hands with Frank Zappa, organ breakdown meets New Zealand popsters' flip way with a hook--will sound perfectly familiar to American listeners...Option (11-12/96, pp.106-107) - ...This band's influences are unabashedly prog-rock (evidence: a Soft Machine cover and another song named after that band's Kevin Ayers). They're skilled enough to execute their ambitious ideas, and...wise enough to maintain a sense of light-hearted humor...Rolling Stone  (10/17/1996)Portions of this page Copyright 1948-2010 Muze Inc. and Muze Europe Ltd.
