Parish's dark, scaly guitar work and raw, angular percussion create the perfect backdrop for Harvey's songpoetry. Like her hero Nick Cave (Cave's right-hand man Mick Harvey--no relation to PJ--is the only other musician credited on DANCE HALL), Harvey employs a blues sensibility more overheard than inherited as a starting point for very British tales of death and dismay. Such material might easily cross the line into pretension were it not for the solid artistic vision that informs Harvey's writing and empowers her delivery.
