RARE c1578 SPANISH COLONIAL SILVER 8 REALES COB COIN

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.Item specificsCirculated/Uncirculated: CirculatedCountry: BoliviaMaterial: Silver  I am back with another wonderful selection of rare and high-quality US and Spanish Colonial coins to offer on eBay. These include silver and gold coins from the following Spanish Colonial mints: Lima Peru, Potosi Bolivia, Santiago Chile, Nuevo Reino (Bogota) and Popoyan Colombia, Mexico City, Durango, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Guatemala City, and several of the Spanish peninsular mints, including Madrid, Sevilla, Segovia, Granada, and/or Toledo. Values range from 1/4 reales (cuartillos) up to 8 reales (duros), and medio escudos (durillos) up to 8 escudos (full doubloons).

Next up is a rare c1578-B (quite possibly an even rarer B/L over-assayer!) Spanish Colonial 8 reales silver cob, struck at the royal mint in Potosi Bolivia during the reign of Spain's King Felipe II (1556-1598). Well struck (though slightly doubled) on a nearly perfectly-round planchet, and showing most of the key details on the shield side. Note the apparent B/L assayer mark, the commas in the legends, the Lima-style upright-lion in the shield of Brabant, and the clear value " oVIII" to the right of the shield. The back is also well aligned and well struck, though it shows some minor signs of surface porosity. This cob was reportedly recovered from a small buried hoard (tapado), found near Huånuco, Peru. Overall, a solid early example of the work of assayer Juan Ballesteros Narvaez, who was active at Potosi for his first tenure around ~1578-1580.

Cobs of this quality and scarcity are difficult to find these days, and command a significant premium over other cobs...

Calico 114-158 variante. Weight = 26.7 grams.
