This two-disc set is Rich in pre-techno tribal mode, featuring just six extensive tracks, five of which eclipse the 20-minute-plus mark.Typical of the set (and the way Rich was operating at the time) is the opening "Cave Paintings," a nearly somnambulant excursion into half-dream states and the peripheries of REM sleep. With its teeming cricket hordes, delicately placed distant bell sounds, and forlorn, deep synth lines, this daunting track not only evokes a variety of farflung landscapes and environmental incursions, but places the listener in a heightened sense of awareness, serenity, and introspection, much like Steve Roach's equally galvanic QUIET MUSIC and STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE recordings. Rich's palette here is a lot more textured; he draws upon a slightly more active tonal sprawl, complete with occasional sonic illumination of the dusky horizons. Supple, gorgeous stuff.Portions of this page Copyright 1988 - 2010 MSI Music Corp. All rights reserved.Portions of this page Copyright 1948 - 2010 Muze Inc. All rights reserved.During the period 1979-1984, Robert Rich was busy with psychology studies, Sleep Concerts and developing his musical style via a series of different experiments, ranging from solo work to performances that buried the audience in layers of sound from all directions. The music on Trances/Drones is drawn from that period, including all of the Trances and Dronesmaterial, plus the title track from Sunyata, Rich's first release, and the previously unreleased "Resonance." The music here is wonderfully relaxing (more so with the Trancesmaterial than with Drones) and perpetually fascinating. There's a lot more going on in most of the material here than would be expected at first blush -- layer after layer of swirling textures and tones -- and you'll find that interrupting one of these pieces is generally a shock: Rich has a talent for finding the internal rhythms of the body, which means you should allow the music to let you go gently (which, in the end, it does).
